In 1921, America and Soviet Bolshevism mixed for the first time in the crucible of one event:

a famine that threatened the lives of millionsof Russians. For the members of the American
rescue operation, it was an experience without precedent or parallel-an experience that

would test the limits and power
of American efficiency, optimism, and moral uplift - an encounter that would launch seven decades of epic rivalry.

These were Herbert Hoover's men, former doughboys who saved lives by preaching the superiority of the American way, an ethic as old as the republic itself. This is a film about the American Relief Administration's campaign to battle starvation in Bolshevik Russia in the years following the First World War.
It is a story of patriots, of men who confronted death with determinism, and who found their American experience a difficult fit in the place they called Bololand.
